Dewey book reclassification project continues after 39 years

by Judy Orahood, Cataloging Manager

Reclassification is the term used for changing call numbers from the Dewey Decimal Classification
System to the Library of Congress Classification (LC). The majority of academic libraries use the Library of Congress system, and Beeghly Library began using LC call numbers in 1966. Reclassification has been a topic of discussion and part of the Technical Services workflow for 39 years!
The first Dewey Decimal books were reclassified in 1966 when the library stopped using the Dewey Decimal system. A total of 27,834 items were reclassified that year.

An estimate of 195,000 books that needed to be reclassified was reported in the 1984-1985 school
year. In the 1992-1993 school year, an anonymous gift of $30,000 was made to be used towards the
reclassification effort. The money covered all costs related to the reclassification of 15,900 items. Now, in 2005, there are only 17,605 more books to go!
