Carnegie Mellon Libraries - Dewey to LC Reclassification Project

Library Catalog



  • Library of Congress (LC) call numbers now appear in the library catalog for most books except Dewey 700s (HL 4 arts collection).

  • Arts books will remain in Dewey order until summer 2008.


Engineering and Science Library



  • The E&S collection (STACKS, etc.) is labeled and shelved in LC order.

  • Some books are shelved separately (in Dewey order) until their LC numbers are assigned.

Hunt Library



  • LC classes A-HX are shelved in order on the 2nd floorNew item

  • Rearranging continues on the 2nd floor.

  • All books Q-Z are shelved in order in the basement.

  • A limited collection of books without LC call numbers are shelved separately in Dewey order.

  • Library staff will help you find books.


 







Transformation Project Assistants Needed 
Apply labels to books, move and reshelve books.


  • Enrolled Carnegie Mellon students  apply here

  • All others interested in temporary FT or PT employment  apply here







  • The transformation is the result of a decision to convert E&S and Hunt books from the Dewey Decimal Classification system to the Library of Congress Classification system.

  • The project involves only Hunt and E&S books because the LC classification is already in place at the Mellon Institute, Qatar, and Software Engineering Institute libraries.
