In January 2002 the library began a Library of Congress Reclassification project. During the 4 ½
year project, the majority of the collection was reclassified from the Dewey Decimal System to the
Library of Congress Classification System. The Juvenile collection (for the use of Education majors)
remains in the Dewey Decimal System, which is the classification system used by pubic school libraries.
This project also involved a very comprehensive review of the collection. Approximately 24,000 old
and out-of-date items were withdrawn from the collection and newer materials were added to update
and fill-in areas where the collection was weak or heavily used. Buying patterns have changed as result
of the project. In reviewing the collection item-byitem we realized what areas of the collection were
heavily used. One surprise was the philosophy area.

When it was found that these books were circulated frequently, additional items where purchased.
The Reference collection was also greatly revised. Old or unused materials were withdrawn, and newer
editions and titles were purchased. The collection is now considerably leaner and more focused in its
purpose as stated in the Collection Development policy.

The collection was reviewed by the faculty, librarian subject specialists from other libraries and the library staff. The collection was also compared with professional publications such as the 3rd edition of
Books for College Libraries. Table 5-2 shows the volume counts that were reported on the 2007 ALS report (IPEDS).
